Honey is one of the few natural products that have an almost unlimited shelf life. However, with proper storage, you can maintain its taste and quality optimally. Here’s how.
The basic rules
Store honey at room temperature, in a tightly sealed jar, away from direct sunlight. A kitchen cupboard is perfect. There is no need to store it in the refrigerator, and doing so can even be counterproductive: honey crystallises faster and hardens in the fridge.
Use a dry spoon
Moisture is honey’s greatest enemy. Always use a dry spoon and seal the jar tightly after use. This prevents water from getting into the honey and helps preserve its quality.
Is crystallised honey bad?
No, quite the opposite. Crystallisation is a natural process and actually a sign of pure, unprocessed honey. You can read all about it in our article Why does honey crystallise?. If you want to make the honey liquid again, heat the jar in a water bath at a maximum temperature of 40 degrees.
How long does honey last?
Pure honey almost never spoils thanks to its low moisture content and natural sugars. The expiry date on the label is mainly a legal formality. If you store your honey properly, you can enjoy it for years.
